Join a fireside chat and deep listening music experience with Theo Parrish, the legendary producer, DJ, sound sculptor, and Sound Signature label founder, on Thursday, November 12, at Solotech Studios. This program is co-presented by Into The Woods LA and EARTH CALLING. EARTH CALLING is an arts organization that creates culture for nature, personal wellness and planetary healing. We amplify creatives and deepen our relationship with nature through culture-shifting events, art and media centered on creativity, wellness, and environmental storytelling. Theo Parrish was born in Washington D.C. in 1972 and raised in Chicago, IL where his passion for music developed. He began spinning and producing tracks in 1986, at the age of thirteen. After graduating from the Academy for the Arts, he received a scholarship to the Kansas City Art Institute where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Sound Sculpture, a form of orchestration using live instruments, looped recordings, the human voice, and numerous other sound generating devices. In 1994, Theo Parrish moved to Michigan where he became heavily involved in Detroit's underground music scene. For over two decades he has produced a robust discography of original recordings, managed a record label, and continues to deliver dynamic sets all over the world.

Theo Parrish, open to close Detroit Incoming opened in February with ten days of Detroit artists in Bay Area rooms.
It closes Sunday, November 15, with Theo Parrish at Audio, a day party with the skylights open. In April, Theo rewrote the rulebook for Oakland. Seven hours deep at The Loom— sun-drenched into star-soaked, no letup. Theo said it himself: what you gave that floor was something else.
And he wasn't wrong. One crowd moving like it had rehearsed. Theo Parrish was born in Washington, D.C. and raised in Chicago. He’s a DJ, producer, selector, arranger, keyboard clunker, machine beater, writer, sculptor, car lover, visual artist, lecturer and father. Detroit has known his work since 1995, from the days of Buy Rite Records, Saint Andrew’s Hall, the Rhythm Kitchen and Alvin’s. In 1997 he started Sound Signature Recordings. It still presses all its vinyl independently, all of it at Archer Record Pressing Co. on Davison Avenue. He keeps pushing the limits of what we call Black dance music, and he shows what creative independence looks like. He holds a BFA in sound sculpture from Kansas City Art Institute.

Since 1995, !K7’s DJ-Kicks mix series has invited DJs to share their musical worlds: the records that shaped them, the discoveries they live for, and the connections they hear between genres.
From Carl Craig and Moodymann to Theo Parrish, it’s become an essential introduction to the art of selection, opening up record collections and inspiring generations of listeners. For this occasion, that spirit comes to life across a full day of deep house, soul, jazz, disco and unexpected discoveries. At the heart of it all is an extended set from Theo Parrish. Raised in Chicago and rooted in Detroit, Theo has spent three decades exploring the breadth of black dance music. Through his Sound Signature label, productions and uncompromising DJ sets, he connects raw, off-centre house with the soul, funk and jazz running through it. His 2022 DJ-Kicks, Detroit Forward, offered a window into the city’s living musical community. Here, he’ll have the time and space to follow those connections wherever they lead. Joining him is Palms Trax, whose own musical education began digging through Chicago house and Detroit techno while working in a London record shop. His 2013 debut Equation and subsequent releases on Dekmantel introduced a producer with a feel for warm melodies, bubbling synths and loose, infectious rhythms. Behind the decks, that palette opens out into deep house, rare disco and unexpected records from across decades and continents. From his Cooking with Palms Trax radio show on NTS to his longstanding connection with Dekmantel, curiosity and a generous sense of joy run through everything he does. Completing the lineup are two of our favorite Berlin selectors, Stella Zekri and Natalie Robinson.

Theo Parrish is one of one. A cult figure in the underground, known for sets where he fully follows his own path. No predictable drops or easy routes. Theo digs deep, follows his instincts and builds a dancefloor like only he can. For many, he’s simply one of the best to ever do it.
And Rotterdam knows. Theo has stepped behind the decks here around ten times over the years, building a special connection with the city and its crowd. Five years after his last Rotterdam show, he’s finally back. This time, the main room is all his: Theo Parrish all night long. From house to soul, funk, jazz, techno and back again. No fixed route, just Theo behind the decks.
In the second room, Shy One gets all the space she needs. The London DJ and producer has been a key force in the UK underground for years, with a sound that’s as wide-ranging as it is sharp. Broken beat, house, bass, jazz, bruk and leftfield electronics come together in sets that never stop moving. Exactly that open-minded London club energy that fits 360 Degrees perfectly.

THE DANCEFLOOR AS AN ARCHIVE - Theo Parrish in conversation with Andrew Makkinga
Ahead of his all-night set at BIRD, legendary Detroit DJ and producer Theo Parrish sits down with journalist and broadcaster Andrew Makkinga for an intimate conversation about the music, cities and spaces that shaped him.
Rather than a conventional career retrospective, The Dancefloor as an Archive begins with Theo’s own experiences: his earliest musical memories, growing up in Chicago, his move to Detroit, how his musical identity developed, and the relationship between a DJ, a room and the people in it.
The conversation also looks at how music travels through time. What happens when older records meet younger audiences? What do particular clubs, record stores, sound systems and returning audiences make possible? And what becomes harder to pass on when independent cultural spaces disappear?
Through personal memories, stories, and reflection, the evening explores listening, place, history, exchange, and how music can connect different generations, allowing the wider history to emerge through Theo’s own experiences and practice.
The conversation concludes with a moderated exchange with the audience.

Two giants of soulful electronic music unite for a one-night-only, live reimagining of their seminal discographies. A tireless innovator of Black British music, Dego has spent over 30 years shaping the contours of dance and electronic culture. From his early roots in sound system culture and pirate radio to his genre-defining work with 4hero, and as founder of 2000BLACK and a key architect of London boogie, his output fuses jazz, soul, techno and futurist electronics with deep London roots. Having only performed publicly a handful of times, this is an exceptionally rare full-scale appearance from the 2000Black band. Theo Parrish is the pivotal Washington D.C.-born, Detroit-based DJ, producer and founder of Sound Signature, renowned for his raw, afro-futurist sound and uncompromising dedication to electronic music as a Black art form. A fixture of global underground culture and a member of supergroup 3 Chairs (alongside Moodymann, Rick Wilhite and Marcellus Pittman), Parrish brings his signature “sound sculpture” approach to the stage powered by the mighty Sound Signature Voices trio: Ideeyah Supreme, Khadeeja Grace and Monica Blaire. Curated by Errol and Alex Rita as part of TB10: Touching Bass’ 10th Anniversary World Tour, the night continues their concert series partnership with the Barbican Centre. As torchbearers of a new generation shaped by the principles and practices of Theo Parrish and Dego, they are uniquely positioned to realise this meeting. TB10 extends their ethos globally, partnering with artists, venues and like-minded musical entities for a year-long programme of club nights, concerts and intimate gatherings.

RSVP is $10 before 11pm and $15 before midnight. An RSVP is good for one person. If you're bringing friends, please have them RSVP here as well. We stop taking RSVPs at 6pm on the day of the party. In order to receive the RSVP discount, you must be at the ticket desk by the cutoff time and not just in line. It's wise to arrive early to make sure you're not standing in line when the time comes.
